The Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, are the No1 and No2 seeds for the ladies’ Wimbledon singles, meaning the Americans could meet in a third Wimbledon final in succession, and a fifth altogether. Serena won last year and Venus in 2008. Serena also won their meetings in 2002 and 2003.
Venus has won the title five times, but only that once against Serena. Serena has won the title three times, beating her sister on each occasion.
The seedings are calculated using a formula that takes into account a player’s performance on grass, but unlike in the men’s seedings, the top women’s seeding mirror exactly the world rankings, at the highest levels at least. So the top 11 players in the world by currently rankings are seeded in that order in the top 10 Wimbledon seedings (Dementieva is not playing Wimbledon).
Serena and Venus together are seeded No1 in the women’s doubles.
A PDF of the full seedings can be downloaded from the Wimbledon website.
