A digest of some of the Newcastle United stories making headlines today

.

Chris Hughton should be given a long-term contract at the club according to goalkeeper Steve Harper. “He has been the ideal manager for us,” Harper says. “He doesn’t work the crowd; he just gets his head down and gets on with the job. He doesn’t milk it; he gets on with things irrespective of things going on around him. He is incredible. He is always the same, he doesn’t get carried away when things are going well and he doesn’t get too down when they are not. He is very level-headed, which is what this club needs. He is the perfect man for the job.”

.

Kevin Nolan will become a target for Everton if Steven Pienaar leaves Goodison when his contract expires, apparently. If. If.

.

Cheik Tiote, Ivorian newcomer to Tyneside, answers fans’ questions on the official site. An interesting read, including: friends from Africa said Newcastle was the place to be; he started playing aged 12; his hero is Essien; he doesn’t mind the weather (yet); he doesn’t glue the ball to his foot; and: “Living in the North-East is great. I’ve found Newcastle to be a very peaceful city.”

.

Newcastle and their fellow Premier League newcomers West Brom and Blackpool remain on course to defy the odds and all stay up this season. Analysis here.
