Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney has this afternoon said via Twitter that Scotland Yard have indicated to him that he has been a victim of phone hacking.
“Scotland Yard detectives came to see me earlier and showed me some documents, looks like a newspaper have hacked into my phone,” he wrote, adding “Big surprise” as an ironic postscript.
Hundreds of people – possibly thousands – have reportedly been victims of phone hacking by the News of the World. They include many sports stars, particularly footballers and football managers. Sportingintelligence knows of at least five high-profile managers taking legal advice about being possible hacking victims.
The Guardian, which has led the way in exposing the hacking cases, has a catalogue of stories at this link, including the news that Rooney is considering suing the NotW.
