Liverpool may be about to go 18-19 behind Manchester United in the tally of top level English football titles but their recent revival has put hope in the hearts of their fans. History says this should endure through the weekend because on Sunday they welcome to Anfield one of their most generous guests of the Premier League era – Tottenham.
Tottenham have won only once at Anfield in their 18 Premier League visits so far (and that was on 25 August 1993 when Teddy Sheringham scored both goals in a 2-1 win) and have returned south with a paltry eight points, leaving Liverpool with a massive 41.
Liverpool’s complete club-by-club home record against each of the current Premier League teams is in the table below. Only two of the clubs featured have won more points at Anfield than they have given to the hosts: Manchester United and Blackpool.
United have won nine times out of 19, lost seven and drawn three. Blackpool have won on their only visit.
With two rounds of Premier League matches to go – 20 games in total – only 22 more goals are required to for this to become the third best goalscoring season in the Premier League’s 19-year history. Manchester City’s goal on Wednesday was the 998th in the league this season, and 1,020 would be enough for this season to be the third most prolific.
That will surely happen, at the very least. In which case the next target is 56 more goals from 20 games to beat last season’s total of 1,053; or 63 more goals from 20 games to beat the all-time Premier League record from 1999-2000 of 1,060 goals.
To end where we came in, Liverpool are blazing the goal scoring trail at the moment with 23 in their last eight games.
