Few figures in world football are as widely respected as the late England manager, Bobby Robson, and testament to his enduring popularity is the fact that so many stars of the modern game continue to contribute to fund-raising in his memory.
This year’s edition of the Sir Bobby Auction provides you with a chance to bid for money-can’t-buy prizes ranging from a training session with Barcelona – Messi (scoring a wondergoal in May, below), Suarez, Neymar et al – to a once-in-a-lifetime Russian football experience courtesy of Andre Villas-Boas to brilliant seats at next year’s Champions League final in Milan or Euro 2016 in France. ‘Sir Bobby is a true legend of the game – a great man, a great manager and a real gentleman. I often think of him and the inspiration he gave me not only at Porto but throughout his life,’ says Villas-Boas.
‘The fact that so many fellow managers and people around the world are supporting this campaign speaks more about his legacy than I ever could.’
AVB’s donation to this year’s auction is a trip to St Petersburg, hosted by him, to see what makes Zenit tick while you enjoy the splendour of the imperial capital of Russia.
The auction started on 14 November and runs to 29 November with proceeds going towards the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and other charities. You can see all the brilliant available lots here, where you can also register and place your bid.
There is memorabilia donated by some of the most famous names in football from Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho to Wayne Rooney, from Barcelona and Arsenal, to Manchester City, Manchester United, Ipswich Town, Newcastle United and PSV Eindhoven.
Ipswich Town defender Kevin Beattie, once described by Sir Bobby as one of the best players he had ever managed, has donated his England cap from the 5-0 win over Cyprus in 1975.
The auction boasts a host of match day experiences at Premier League giants while you can also experience what it takes to work in the media at Newcastle, have lunch with Ledley King, meet up with Rangers boss Mark Warburton just hours before his team pay at Ibrox or Neil Harris is inviting you to become a ‘footballer for the day’ with Millwall.
But it is not just football that is well represented in this year’s Sir Bobby’s Online Auction, which has raised more than £700,000 since its inception four years ago, with a host of auction items from the world of sport, celebrity and lifestyle.
