Three British-based players – Manchester United’s Park Ji-Sung, Celtic’s Ki Sung-Yueng and Bolton’s Lee Chung-Yong are among eight midfielders named today in South Korea’s final 23-man squad for the World Cup.
The squad, nicknamed the ‘Taeguk Warriors’, was announced at the Korean training base in Neustift, Austria, by the coach, Huh Jung-Moo, and details have been published on the Korean FA’s website.
South Korea have been drawn in a tough section in Group B, along with Argentina, Nigeria and Greece. They open their World Cup campaign on 12 June against Greece in Port Elizabeth.
The Koreans’ best performance in a World Cup was when they reached the semi-finals on home turf in 2002 under Guus Hiddink.
Thirteen of the 23 play their football in South Korea, two in England, two in Japan, one in Saudi Arabia (their most-capped player, Lee Young-Pyo, formerly with Tottenham), one in Germany, one in Russia, one in Scotland, one in China and one in France.
