Glenn Hysen, one of the stars of the last Liverpool team to win the English league title in 1990, tells sportingintelligence today that Kenny Dalgish is the man Liverpool need to to restore the “heart and soul” to the club.
The Swedish international defender, 50, was an integral part of a side, managed by Dalglish, that won the title 20 years ago, and remains in close contact on a daily basis with staff and players at the club.
In a revealing insight that shows how low morale has pervaded Anfield this season, Hysen tells this website in an interviewed linked here:
- that he has witnessed first-hand divisions within the dressing room this season, “Spanish players in one corner, French players in another, and so on. It is not cosy. It used to be that when you played for Liverpool, you were all part of one big family, not any more it seems.”
- that Dalglish “definitely wants the job. Maybe he would appoint other former players alongside him, the likes of Ian Rush perhaps.”
- that the Liverpool academy “has stopped producing first-team players . . . it has stopped working . . . that is a big crisis. It needs to be better and Kenny knows that and has already been working in that area.”
- and that while Hysen thinks that the favourite for the job, Roy Hodgson, is a “is a fantastic guy”, the Swede – whose career took him to clubs in the Netherlands and Serie A as well as England – adds: “I would say that Roy’s teams produce effective football, but not necessarily fun football.”
A groundswell of popular opinion is mounting behind Dalglish, who definitely wants the job. Liverpool’s board and owners are working to find a replacement for Rafa Benitez as soon as possible.
