There are 103 games remaining in this 19th season of the Premier League and an average of three goals per game would see a record level of goals in England’s revamped top flight.
Overall so far this season the rate works out at 2.74 goals per game, which if maintained season-long would reap a harvest of 1,041 goals – the third-best season of the Premier League era, and only 12 goals behind the total for last season, which currently holds second spot behind 1999-2000.
But. Oh yes, there is often a but and a positive but at that.
Since January, goal scoring has touched three goals per game in the Premier League and if that rate were to be maintained, it would be enough to better the 1,060 goals of 11 seasons ago.
Last season it was Chelsea who gave a late boost to the season’s tally with 38 goals from their last 10 games. Who could follow in their shooting boots this campaign? Maybe they themselves, to launch a late title shout?
Thus far, it is Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United who have scored most, with 62 Premier League goals in 28 games, followed by Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Blackpool.
If only goals scored equalled points then Ian Holloway’s Lancs oranjie would be tilting for Europe not plunging into a relegation battle. Nobody outside the top four has scored as many as 20 away goals this season as Blackpool, who have also netted 22 times at home.
At the less prolific end of the scoring table, Birmingham have managed a measly 25 goals in total, 13 of them at home and 12 away.
